How to write a killer email!

  We live in a truly digital world. Thanks to smartphones and high-speed internet connections, we are able to connect with friends, colleagues and companies across the globe in just a few clicks of our screen. This has transformed how we all engage with the world around us, and love it or hate it, email has become one of the leading forms of communication. In 2022, it is estimated that across the globe, 333.2 billion emails are sent and received daily, and the average person will receive over 120 emails every day. With so many communications arriving in our inboxes every day, ensuring your email is able to stand out from the crowd has never been more important.   • Nail your subject

With hundreds of emails arriving in our inboxes every day, vague or unclear subject lines are a big no, particularly if you are messaging someone you do not know. This means that your priority should be nailing your subject line, so focus on summing up the entire email in one eye-catching and intriguing line. The aim of the subject line is to give the recipient a reason to open your email, and ensure that when they scan their inbox, it stands out. Before pressing send, review it once more and ask yourself, “would this make me read it?”  
  • Focus on your tone

The tone of your email should be dependent on who you are emailing. Close friends and colleagues will allow you to use a more relaxed and chatty tone of voice, but if you are emailing your boss or a new individual, then keep it formal and free from slang. You should also try to avoid humour, as it is always hard to convey in written form.  
  • Keep it brief

One of the best ways to guarantee a response to your email is to keep it brief and to the point. Most people do not have the time or patience to read through paragraphs of unnecessary information so try to keep your message as succinct and direct as possible.  
  • Stay on topic

Although you might be tempted to ask a dozen questions, try and keep your email to the point and stick to one or two topics. This will help ensure that you are able to remain concise in your wording and also increase the likelihood of receiving a reply from your recipient.  
  • Proofread

The most important tip to a killer email is to proofread. Before you press send, give the email a couple of ‘re-reads’ to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes and that everything makes sense.
